House Committee Holds Hearing on ESSA Implementation
The House Education and the Workforce Committee held a hearing titled, “ESSA Implementation: Exploring State and Local Reform Efforts” to hear from state and local representatives and other stakeholders about the progress and challenges of ESSA implementation to date. Ranking Member Bobby Scott (D-VA) emphasized that ESSA provided critical civil rights guardrails that states and districts must comply with, while Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) stated the importance of a limited federal role. In conjunction with the hearing, the GAO released a report, “Early Observations on State Changes to Accountability Systems,” which includes selected stakeholders’ and states’ views of ESSA’s flexibilities to redesign accountability systems and US ED’s next steps in implementing ESSA.
